In the 400’s AD, the ‘Portout Potters’, living between the Bourget lake and the Rhone, on the edge of the Savière Canal, were making utilitarian ceramics, called ‘ceramics with a shiny clay glaze’.
This production was distributed in the Savoy countryside, in Switzerland and by the waterways (Rhone and Saône) to Provence and Franche-Comte, to supply the military quarters or civil sites.
The importance of the workshop is shown by its influence and the quality of material found on the site. The excavations took place between 1976 and 1987 in the Savière and on its banks : a complete collection of representative ceramics were discovered with objects - tools - money - amphorae - which show evidence of supplies originating from external sources and daily life in a rural environment.
The dedicated museum is open since 2001 in an old Gothic Chapel.
